What are the warmest toughest mittens?

I can not find good mittens that look duable. I would rather have mittens with a finger for shooting.

I have seen mittens made of boiled wool.
The boiling process shrinks the wool and turns it into a kind of matting.
Pretty darn tough.
Warm too.

Chewed deer skin - fur side inwards - made by Native Indians, no contest.

I had frozen fingers many years ago skiing and my friend who had a pair of such mitts, made by a squaw, lent them to me. It is was incredible how fast my fingers warmed up. I have never seen the like, before or since.

Alternatively I would suggest silk gloves as an inner layer on some other warm mitt - eg sheep skin.

Look for ones that say they have thinsulate.

You might also try some of the little hand warmer packets. Buy them at China-mart.

Try an Army Surplus store, I've purchased several durable pairs of shooting mittens w/ a trigger finger they are a 2 piece mitten w/ an inner wool mitten and a seperate leather/canvas outer mitten.

yeah i agree with brewer...

military surplus for a mitten yields the unique quality of not only probably the best product but also the best price...and i use mine the same way with wool liner gloves...

you won't regret it...these are arctic mittens so they fit the bill for warmest, toughest...

I have been trashing a pair of these

for the last three years.

They started off for fishing only

And instantly degenerated into the go-to gloves.

yeah that looks like them. It rarely gets much colder than -25 F here, and thats plenty cold, but those mittens worked great at that temperature...I used them for snowmaching in cold temperatures...

of course, now that i'm in the autumn of my life i have more sense than to go out in that temperature and find myself staying by the heater drinking hot cocoa and surfing the internet...

:)

its -26 F this morning, we seem to be having a cold snap lately...hopefully it will warm up soon...

I use Kangaroo for gloves, very thin, very workable, very strong. They are warm, but there is no lining in them. This means that I can smoke, shoot, do dexterious tasks, etc without taking them off. However, they are warm, but NOT that warm!

Mittens are the real deal, they'll keep ya warm, but they are always a compromise on *some* level.

Try the Uber Glove Company. They are in Owatana MN and they make all kinds of deer skin gloves and mittens. I just special ordered 2 pair of elk skin chopper mittens and they are awsome. Will outlast anything from the discount stores and are made in the USA. The elk skin items can be hit or miss depending on if they have hides, I wanted mooseskin but no luck.

I think you already have some great suggestions. It is never cold enough here for mittens, but I have really found items from Cabelas to be durable and they make mittens for extreme cold.

Here's a kind of mid range one

They have a wet weather advantage too.

A generous layer of 200-gram Thinsulate Insulation on the back provides lightweight warmth without bulk, while a 100-gram layer in the palm cuts the chill, yet maintains sensitivity. An insert of waterproof, windproof GORE-TEX keeps your hands dry, yet breathes to eliminate that clammy feeling. A layer of tanned cowhide on the palm and thumb gives these gloves longer life. Knit cuffs, elasticized wrists and adjustable wrist straps customize these mittens for a weatherproof, comfortable fit. Imported.
Not bad for 30 bucks, but not American made detracts. The pic is the 30 buck model. The top of the line looks to be this 60 buck model.
